After three extraordinarily tight games against South London Storm in both London Leagues - Youth and Open Age – in which they were unbeaten, Southgate ran riot in their first ever appearance on the main pitch at New River, racking up a club record score in the curtain raiser to the Skolars v Keighley match in National League Two. With South London only bringing the bare 13 they were always going to be up against it and when Darren Luxford caught Doug Hann’s clever short goal-line drop-out and raced 70 metres to score after a minute, and Mike Gonta pounced on a loose ball to score two minutes later, they were facing a huge task.

Luxford again and Chris Tipple – with two goals by Stuart Hann – made it 20-0 after just 13 minutes and the game was almost up for the visitors. Impressive newcomer Chris Deroeck got the first of his two tries, and Nathaniel Alacaraz-Stapleton showed his increased fleet of foot to tear away to score off Eddie Mbaraga’s pass. Doug Hann converted and then scored his own try from Matt Harrall’s break, then Leeson Sinclair’s footwork earned him a try, Doug Hann kicking Southgate’s 50th point of the half.

Storm started the second-half well and after being held up twice and repelled twice more, finally touched down at the Tottenham end, converting for 54-6. But Mbaraga got the ball rolling again for the youngsters, with Tipple, Cameron Martindale-Durning and Stu Hann all going over to bring the final score to 72-6.
