Another sunny and windy day on Saturday saw a strong Bedford side demonstrate what they have been promising all season. At first it looked like one of those days again when the Tigers dropped the ball from the kick off, but this was quickly rectified as the Tigers soon got the ball back to enable centre Paul Beddard to go in for the first try in the second minute. This was soon followed by the first of six tries to be scored by the man of the match South African Robert Harris who stormed through the St Albans line. The third try was scored by winger Ben Robinson after 12 minutes due to the Tigers being able to offload the ball on multiple occasions, then another storming run in the 14th minute brought up try no 2 for Harris. The fifth Tigers try was scored in the 17th minute by Simon Bannister who was playing at stand off for the first time, the result of a deft step which bamboozled the defence to take the score to 30-0. Bannister demonstrated his potential as player of the future.
Around the 20 minute mark saw the introduction of interchange player Richard Harris (no relation to Robert) who made his mark on the game immediately with a thunderous tackle on a St Albans player, who unfortunately as a result could take no further part in the game. This was followed by a try to scrum half and veteran Phil Walker on the 22 minute mark. It was to be another 12 minutes before the Tigers were to cross the whitewash, mainly due to a bit of overconfidence which saw the ball go to ground on occasions. A minor scuffle on the pitch around this time did not seem to spark the Tigers back into life either, but in the 34th minute Robert Harris secured his hat trick by again running round and then through the defence. The scoring for the first half was completed by loose forward Ben Begeant, in only his second game of rugby league, to take the score at half-time to 48-0.
It looked as though the second half would carry on in the same way as the first with Robert Harris scoring his fourth try in the 42nd minute. However, St Albans were able to put the kick off into touch, and in the ensuing possession were able to get on the scoreboard to make the score 54-4. The Tigers soon regained composure when Robert Harris scored his fifth try in the 52nd minute, followed by his double hat-trick try on the 61st. The Centurions again regained possession from the kick off for a converted try that brought the score to 66-10.
The try of the day came in the 68th minute when prop Doug de St Aubin managed an unbelievable step to wrong foot the defenders and storm in under the posts from about 20 metres out. Ben Begeant managed to get himself a brace in the 72nd minute, before St Albans grabbed themselves a consolation try in the 76th. The final score of the game went to winger Ben Robinson who bagged his second.
Captain Rob Ashton finished the day with a Development team record of 11 conversion in a game, whilst burly Robert Harris in only his second game of rugby league scored a phenomenal six tries.
