Farnborough hosted their first London
Amateur Rugby League home match versus South London Storm II. The Storm
are a club that Farnborough should be aiming to be like; and proved why
they have been going strong and celebrating their tenth anniversary of
playing rugby league, as they demonstrated some strong team plays.
Although not the most stylish of teams, they pushed through tackles and
had knowledge of their surrounding players; who to work off and help
out. The Falcons started the game with an early try through their V6
engine man Ashby, who from what was said on the sideline has made
somewhat of a name for himself within the Southern Leagues. Storm
however regained some stability and got a touch down in the right
corner. However, Ashby replied and notched another try onto his season
tally. This was soon cancelled out with another half play getting
another score for Storm in the right corner again. Just before the half
time hooter the Falcons earned another try with a bomb put in the air by
Newbury and gracefully plucked out of the hazy sky by Frost.
The Falcons rotated their players
frequently to stay fresh, this paid off towards half time, although the
scores remained tight the Falcons were just in front, courtesy of
Newbury’s conversions.
The
Falcons started the second half a different team after some wise words
by team captain Parker and experienced debutant half Moore, telling the
squad to keep shape so that the ball will come. As the rain flooded down
at Tile Barn the Falcons surprisingly notched up the points in awful
conditions; some expansive play from the back line on the left flanks
saw debutant Burch go over for two tries. Stuart provided some strong
running off Newbury and Moore and the 'Gaffer took to the conditions
slotting some long distance passes. Hills and Timpson defended hard to
provide the backbone for the Falcons victory.
